Wellness Tips as a Christian: Nurturing Faith and Health
As Christians, there can sometimes be confusion about attending to our physical needs. While we may not practice yoga or other self-care routines rooted in earth-based traditions like crystal healing, that doesn’t mean we can’t or shouldn’t take care of our bodies. Nor does it mean that taking care of ourselves is pointless because God is in control or because this life is temporary. Caring for our physical well-being is an important part of honoring the life God has given us.
Understanding the Body as a Temple
In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, we are reminded that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. This scripture is a powerful motivator for us to care for ourselves. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s a necessary aspect of honoring God through our existence and fulfilling our purpose on Earth. By integrating this concept into our daily living, we can enhance our health while growing spiritually.
1. Prioritize Prayer and Meditation
Making time for prayer and meditation can significantly impact our mental and emotional wellness.
Establish a Routine: I find that setting aside a specific time each day for prayer and meditation on his word provides me with a sense of stability. A great way to start your day is with Morning sessions focused on gratitude.
Use Guided Meditations: There are many Christian guided meditation apps and resources available to help focus on scripture while winding down or starting your day ( make sure it’s a good, trusted source)
2. Nourish the Body with Intent
It’s easy to overlook our dietary choices in a fast-paced world, but taking a moment to reflect on what we consume can be liberating.
– Mindful Eating: When it comes to eating, it’s important to focus on whole foods that truly nourish our bodies—our temples. There are countless cookbooks and recipes available, including many right here on this blog, to help you enjoy healthy, wholesome meals. It’s also perfectly okay to eat out occasionally, but always remember to pray over your food, giving thanks and seeking God’s blessing.
3. Engage in Physical Activity
Movement plays an important role in maintaining our physical health, and it can also uplift our mood.
– Find Your Joy in Movement: Whether it’s walking, dancing, or a structured workout, I encourage exercising in ways that you love. Aerobic, pilates, or even a vibrant dance with praise music.
– Group Activities: Joining a church group for walks or fitness classes can foster community while staying active. This not only promotes physical health but also strengthens our spiritual bonds.
4. Cultivate Rest and Sabbath
In our busy lives, rest is often sidelined, but as Christians, we are called to observe the Sabbath for our spiritual and physical renewal.
– Schedule Time Off: I make it a priority to set aside a day of rest each week. This time allows me to reflect, recharge, and focus on my relationship with God. Sabbath day for my husband and me is usually on Sundays after church. We usually eat out or order food to go!
– Digital Detox: Consider stepping away from your devices during this time. Engaging in nature or reading scripture can be refreshing.
5. Take that vacation
Taking a vacation is important and can be a wonderful way to refresh yourself. If it fits into your schedule and aligns with your priorities with God, make it a priority to plan a trip at least once a year. Use this time to get away, relax, and enjoy quality moments with the people who matter most. Traveling can be a great way to recharge both physically and mentally.
