Faith the Size of a Mustard Seed
Let’s take a moment to study the incredible power of faith and the steadfast presence of Jesus in our lives. Consider the words of Jesus in Matthew 17:20 (NIV): “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.” We know this is a figurative way of speaking about problems that feel as big as mountains.
What I want to highlight is that often, when this verse is discussed, the focus is on the size of the mustard seed rather than the strength that a mustard seed possesses. We’re not called to have tiny faith; we’re called to have resilient faith—faith that endures, no matter how battered we feel by the challenges of real life.
Reflect
We can start with small faith, and eventually, with the help of obedience, that faith will grow. However, we can’t be content with just the size of a mustard seed; our faith needs to grow and become durable, just like the mustard seed itself. It should be so strong that nothing and no one can take away our belief in and trust in God. By spending that valuable time with Him in prayer and scripture, we allow our faith to expand and become more resilient. Let’s encourage others to have durable faith, not small faith. To spend intimate time with our lord and get to know him more through his word, Amen.
